R-phycoerythrin(R-PE), is a kind of fluorescent proteins with useful spectroscopic properties in the visible region of the spectrum are widely used for analysis of cells and molecules in numerous Xuorescence assays with flow cytometry and Xuorescence microscopy. R-phycoerythrin (R-PE) is a phycobiliprotein isolated from marine red algae that exhibits extremely bright red-orange scence. It is excited by Argon laser from 488 to 533 nm, and fluorescence emission peak at 565 nm.
R-phycoerythrin can absorbe photons, and transfer excitons to the red-orange fluorescence.
R-phycoerythrins are widely used in biochemical techniques. R-phycoerythrin can be used as probe in fluorescence flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy and fluorescence immunoassay. Phycoerythrin is also particularly appropriate for use as a protein marker and has industrial applications in food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and biomedical industries.
Recent studies have suggested that the red alga can inhibit cell proliferation of cancer cell. The antitumor activity of red alga is related to various chemical constituents of red alga such as phycoerythrin. Recent studies have suggested that R-phycoerythrin also have high antioxidant activity.

R-藻紅蛋白(R-Phycoerythrin, r-PE)是現在廣泛用於流式細胞儀及螢光顯微鏡技術。R-PE具有螢光特性,其激發光(Excitation spectrum)波長為488-533 nm,可被氬雷射(Argon laser)激發出螢光,散射光(Emission spectrum)波長為565nm。目前r-PE是從海洋紅藻萃取所得到的。
藻紅蛋白具有將紫外線能量轉換為橘紅色螢光的作用,在特定波長激發下,藻紅蛋白能發射強烈的螢光,其螢光強度是螢光素的30-100倍。大多運用在生物指標、螢光探針等生技應用,與食品天然色素、化妝品、保養品、藥品等工業應用。近年來,更有多篇研究報告顯示,藻紅蛋白具有抗衰老、抗氧化、抗發炎與抗腫瘤等生物活性功能。
將藻紅蛋白用於螢光分析,和傳統化學螢光染料相比具有多項優點:
